Even Cristiano Ronaldo’s Euro 2016 final moth is attracted to fame

It was, perhaps, the final indignity for one of the world’s greatest footballers, adding insult, on several levels, to sore knee.
As the Portuguese captain went down, unable to continue after heroically trying to play through the pain barrier having being hacked down earlier in the game, Ronaldo’s Moth, which in terms of people and pets was yesterday even giving Pavlov’s dog a run for his money, alighted on a manicured eyelash to sup the salt of his tears.

At that moment, 25 minutes into the denouement of Euro 16 between France and Portugal, as the stretcher-bearers bore down on him with all manner of life-saving equipment, a few joyriding moths of their own, and crucially, a knee-support and some arnica cream, an irritating bug may have been the least of the great man’s worries as his career flashed in front of his eyes (along with the insect’s proboscis).
But by half-time 50 Twitter accounts had been opened in the bug’s name and, no matter that Portugal would have to play on without their captain, he was no longer the most talked about thing on, or to be more accurate, off the pitch.
Some suggested they had come from Arsène Wenger’s wallet and one said Ronaldo was so famous that Mother Nature had sent moths to dry his tears. Holland and Barrett tweeted that Ronaldo had not got the memo about lavender oil keeping moths away. Presumably they do not miss opportunities quite like Ronaldo did in the Austria game.
Who would have thought it even in the topsy-turvy times in which we live? A humble moth the star of this tournament? Not since David Gower took the Queensland skies in a Tiger Moth 25 years ago has that particular insect earned such notoriety in sport. It could only get more famous if it promptly resigns.
A footballer’s nightmare it may be but Sunday’s final upon which a ‘plague’ of moths descended was an entomologist’s dream and what a spectacular conclusion to the Lepidopterist Society’s week-long annual meeting which drew to a finish in Colorado on Sunday. Just like Ronaldo’s Moth, let’s hope they also had a live feed from Paris.
I have been scouring the internet in search of my own moth trap. The more practical minded could probably fix up a cardboard box and light bulb for a few quid or, conversely, you can pick them off your headlights after a night drive although identification can be problematic.

The ‘Skinner’ looks a good mid-range set-up, coming in at £200 with good reviews, while the ‘Robinson’ retails for about double that. However the ‘Stade de France,’ which comes in at an eye-watering £250 million, is in an absolute league of its own. It does not just collect moths, it collects entire populations and whoever committed the erreur d’ecolier of leaving the lights on the night before should at least be made to pay the Stade’s electric bill.
Of course, with every lepidopterist worth his salt in America at the moment, identification of the species which attended the final has not been easy but according to the Natural History Museum, the large yellow underwing (noctua pronuba) kind of fits. One of its traits is being “freely attracted to light” while, the bumf adds, while also underestimating the size of the snare, ensuring “hundreds can arrive at the trap in peak season”.

Another species to get through security and the crack French swat team was the Silver Y (autographa gamma), a migrant moth which is also common in Britain, at least, until Article 50 is triggered.
‘Y?’ No doubt that is what Ronaldo was asking. Because the modern moth, it seems, like everyone else these days, is attracted to fame.

Cristiano Ronaldo's 'unbelievable' half-time speech inspired Portugal -- Soares

Frank Leboeuf is quite critical of Portugal's defensive nature against France in the final.
Cristiano Ronaldo gave the Portuguese squad what has been described as an "unbelievable" half-time speech, telling his teammates he was "sure" they would beat France in their 1-0 Euro 2016 final victory despite having to go off injured after 25 minutes, Cedric Soares has revealed.
The full-back also said that Portugal were "in shock" when their star captain had to be substituted but that, far from being dejected, a "fantastic" Ronaldo helped motivate the players.

"It was a very tough moment," Soares said. "I remember, for me and the team, everybody was a little bit in shock I think.
"In half-time, Cristiano had fantastic words for us. He gave us a lot of confidence and said 'listen people, I'm sure we will win, so stay together and fight for it.'
"It was really unbelievable. I think all the team had a fantastic attitude. And we showed tonight when you fight as one you are much much stronger."
Cristiano Ronaldo and winning goal scorer Eder celebrate after beating France for the Euro 2016 title.
Asked whether Ronaldo was downbeat after having to go off, Soares said: "No, he was fantastic. His attitude was unbelievable. Always he helped a lot our teammates, he always had a lot of motivational words and all the team of course reacted to them, so it was very good."
Ronaldo spent much of the second half and extra-time acting as an effective assistant manager, giving instructions from the bench, and Soares praised this as beneficial to the players.
"Yes, he had fantastic words for each player in each moment of the game ... I'm really really happy to be part of this group and be champion."
Portugal won the game thanks to Eder's 109th-minute long-range strike. After the game, as Soares spoke to ESPN FC, Ronaldo led a conga line through the mixed zone, although he interrupted his singing to hug any players who were talking to the media.

Jose Mourinho says Manchester United is the "perfect club" for Paul Pogba to become the world's best player

Delight: Mourinho is looking forward to working with Pogba
Manchester United have clinched the £110million world record capture of Paul Pogba.
And Jose Mourinho reckons the Frenchman has joined the “perfect club” to become the best player in the world.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic completed a good day for Mourinho by firing United to a Community Shield win over champions Leicester not long after it emerged his No.1 midfield target Pogba was on the brink of sealing his return to Old Trafford.
The Frenchman, 23, who quit the club four years ago for just £800,000 compensation, will have a medical today after United agreed a £90million with Juventus.
United will also shell out around another £20million in fees to Pogba's agent Mino Raiola.

Happy days: Mourinho saw his side emerge victorious at Wembley

Pogba will sign a five-year deal worth £220,000-per-week after tax and become Mourinho's fourth signing once he passes his medical, which the United boss expects to be a formality.
He said: “(We will sign him) If he goes well in the medical which I think he goes because I see on Instagram he does kung fu, running, basketball, football so he must be fit.
"So on Tuesday I will be there waiting for him. United is the perfect club to bring him to the level he wants to be. The Premier League is the perfect habitat for that.
“If you want to be the best player in the world, if you go to Barcelona or Real Madrid you are in trouble because I don't think think other two big guys will let you develop into that level.
In pictures - Leicester 1-2 Man United:
“Here he has the conditions to develop in the most seen world wide championship, which is incredible, with a team that wants to bring Manchester United to the top again.
“So we have everything to give him and we know the reasons why he wants to come to us. Money, he would get in any big club. That is not the point.
“So he comes because he knows the club, the city, many of the players and wants to be an important part of the Man United project so hopefully everything goes well and he comes to United.”

On Pogba's eye-watering fee, which will eclipse the £86million Real Madrid shelled out for Gareth Bale, Mourinho said: “Football is crazy. The market has become is crazy. What you think this season is crazy you realise three years later is not crazy anymore.
“And there are players that cost £10million that are super expensive because they are players who are really £500,000.
“So what is expensive? I don't know any more.
"I just know he is a big player that is going to be important for a big club like Manchester United and every Manchester United fan around the word will be proud to belong to such a big club.
“I don't think Real Madrid was upset when they broke the record with Gareth Bale with Cristiano Ronaldo.
“[Breaking the record] is not a reason to be sad but it is a reason to be proud with the dimension of the club that can do that and can attract players of that dimension.”

Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Real Madrid training a month after limping out of Euro 2016 final

Just over one month since the final of Euro 2016, in which the Portuguese captain sustained a knee injury, the Real Madrid superstar is back

Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to Real Madrid training just a month after suffering sprained collateral ligament damage in his left knee.
The Portuguese sustained the injury in the first half of the Euro 2016 final against France on July 10.
It was thought that the 31-year-old would need eight weeks to recover but now it appears he is ahead of schedule.
Portuguese teammate Pepe was there to greet Ronaldo at Ciudad Real Madrid on the outskirts of the Spanish capital.

Cristiano Ronaldo has offered financial support to his native Madeira following devastating wildfires which killed three people and led to mass evacuations.
The Real Madrid striker made the offer during a phone call to island president Miguel Albuquerque.
Reports in Portugal didn’t say how much he had offered.
After Wednesday’s conversation he posted a message on his Facebook page revealing his pain over the devastating fires in Madeira and other parts of Portugal, especially the north.
He said: “It is with an aching heart that I’m seeing what’s happening in Madeira and other parts of the country.
“My support goes out with a thank you to all those firefighters who are bravely risking their lives to save so many others. I am with you.”
